How to Start Using the new USB 3.0 Standard Now
USB 2.0 is a second generation USB standard that is significantly faster than generation 1.0 standard. USB 1.0 was notorious for very slow transfer rates and something in the order of 30 times slower than USB 1.0. The raw data transfer rate of USB 2.0 has a theoretical rate of 480Mbps that is reality is influenced by many factors such as the processing and power capabilities of the computer, and the type of media or storage device used. An alternative to time consuming USB 2.0 data transfers is an e-sata connection but this type of connection is not available on most mainstream motherboards.
So it’s a big welcome and why did you take so long to get here to the new USB 3.0 standard. USB 3.0 will transfer data at up to 10 times the speed of USB 2.0. At the present time there are few hardware devices supporting the new standard and I am highlighting two of them here.
The Gigabyte USB 3.0 or 333 motherboards in the P55 chipset offer onboard integration of NEC Electronics USB 3.0and the new SATA-3 standards. This is a milestone in technology with 10x transfer speed in USB 3.0 when compared to the USB 2.0 standard, and 2X the transfer speed of the SATA-2 standard.
These motherboards offer many other technology innovations such as industry first on-die integrated graphics processing. A vast improvement on earlier onboard graphics processing capabilities.
The new Western Digital My Book Usb 3.0 is the first external drive from a major vendor to support the new standard and compares favourable in price to earlier USB 2 versions of the same drive. Data transfer rate on these drives is 5GB/sec (max).Unlike USB 2.0 models of the My Book the USB 3.0 model does not have a capacity meter or a backup program. This might be a blessing in disguise because backup in Windows 7 is superior to most consumer backup programs we come across. The My Book USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports.
The Western Digital Caviar Black Series Sata-3 hard disk can also use the SATA-3 standard of these Gigabyte mainboards.
