Fixing a copy of Windows Media Player that is not playing DVD’s will require some troubleshooting. The error may be occurring with the hardware or with the software. The drivers and software will first need to be updated to ensure that any necessary fixes or patches are installed. In addition make sure the DVD drive is connected to the computer correctly and that none of the cables have gotten loose.

Test to make sure it isn’t the DVD itself. Try inserting multiple DVDs in the drive to see if it is only one DVD that isn’t working. If several DVDs don’t work then the issue is elsewhere.

Download the latest version of Windows Media Player. This can be done by going to microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia and clicking on the “Download” link. Install the software and test if this fixed the problem by trying to play a DVD.

Check the DVD drive’s connections to the computer. Open the PC tower and make sure all the cables are securely fastened to both the DVD drive and the motherboard. If they are not then this is very likely the problem.

Update the “Drivers” for the DVD drive. On the front of the DVD drive (where the DVD is inserted) the manufacturer’s name and model number for the DVD drive should be listed.

If they are not then open the PC tower and look inside at the drive itself; this will definitely display the drive’s information if the front of the DVD drive does not. Visit the manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers for the device.
